BUCKINGHAM, Dr John Herbert

On 21 February 2021, aged 84 years. Former Chief Military Scientist of the New Zealand Defence Force and Director of the Defence Technology Agency (1987-2005), Chair of the Testing Laboratory Registration Council (1998-2004) and Chair of the Waimakariri Health Advisory Group (2012-2017). He was appointed a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the 2003 New Year’s Honours for services to science and technology. That same year, he was elected a Distinguished Life Member of the American Society of Materials (ASM International) for his leadership in advancing technology for the national security of New Zealand and received the Asia/Pacific Metrology Programme (APMP) Prize for his work on improving measurement standards and facilities around the Asia/Pacific region. He is survived by his wife Angela, sons Miles, Nigel and Simon, and grandchildren Aidan and Amelie. Stepfather of Ricardo and Eliane and vovô of his six grandchildren. No flowers by request please.

John’s service will be held in the Harewood Crematorium Chapel, entrance from Wilkinsons Road via Gardiners Road, on Wednesday 3rd March at 2.00.p.m.
